Of Weblog software and twitters

This is the 500th post on that blog! There have been more but various bloggy housekeeping deleted a bunch some time ago..

It is only fitting that 500th blog post is actually a “twitter link.”:http://twitter.com/ko. This weblog runs Movabletype, which died a while back and now I’m sick of the rotting smell. So until I get around to modernizing it, that thar twitter feed below is the new microblog…

In case you missed it, here it is again: “http://twitter.com/ko”:http://twitter.com/ko

In this day and age, it really seems archaic to talk about blogging software. I mean, everyone is on Facebook or twitter anyways, and no one cares how their words and pictures and thoughts and preferences and what not else wind their way through what pipes and meat processors around the globe… or who pays for it and why…

Henry David Thoreau on Facebook in Life Without Principle, back in 1863:

bq. Just so hollow and ineffectual, for the most part, is our ordinary conversation. Surface meets surface. When our life ceases to be inward and private, conversation degenerates into mere gossip. We rarely meet a man who can tell us any news which he has not read in a newspaper, or been told by his neighbor; and, for the most part, the only difference between us and our fellow is that he has seen the newspaper, or been out to tea, and we have not. In proportion as our inward life fails, we go more constantly and desperately to the post-office. You may depend on it, that the poor fellow who walks away with the greatest number of letters, proud of his extensive correspondence, has not heard from himself this long while.

Of course, theres the opposite view by some facebook fan or the other:

bq. It connects me to the people I used to know and like, which the forces of the modern world pushed me away from. Now, I know once again whats going on with them.

How would you finish that? “And that makes me… all the… all the something.. more…”

Anyways, I digress. This here is a blog, handcrafted from pure html way back in the days, than it jumped onto a movable cart and now my cart’s horse is expired.

Html is complex, and much of the power has moved from the lowly notepad editor to powerful cloud computers, but wheres the fun in that? And so this space will live on….

  1. I really totally agree with your posting. I’m just certainly shocked with the massive quickness this web 2 is developing. We sometimes forget the fact that for instance Facebook or Twits didn’t really exist ten years earlier. In any event, very good blog post and intensely fascinating webpage.
